Topeka, KS, USA (May 14, 2015) The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and Burns & McDonnell have released the Kansas Aviation Portal on Cesium’s web-based 3D globe to demonstrate just how interconnected aviation is with the community. With 138 public airports in Kansas, and additional private airports, this portal actualizes aviation data to develop a clear picture for airspace awareness, economic impact and pavement conditions.
The portal is the latest joint effort from the KDOT and Burns & McDonnell partnership, which began with the Kansas Airspace Aviation Tool (KAAT) in 2011. KDOT Aviation Director Jesse Romo says, “The Kansas Aviation Portal takes our data visualization and airport awareness campaign to a whole new level.”
By using Cesium and leveraging Analytical Graphics, Inc.’s (AGI) online terrain server, KDOT is able to present this data in a concise format, easily accessed online, and on mobile devices. While Burns & McDonnell initially built the portal using Google Earth, they joined a community shift to the open source, web-based Cesium project.
AGI’s Director of Geospatial Technology, Todd Smith notes, “As changes have been occurring within the marketplace, people are adopting Cesium because of its openness, ability to stream content, and no plugin requirement.”
The Kansas Aviation Portal’s engaging and interactive display is a valuable resource for airport interconnectivity, and for training in the Kansas State University: Salina’s Airport Management program.
Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI) is the incubator of the Cesium team who is the founder and primary contributor to the Cesium open source project. The Cesium team also builds off the shelf software product to enable the rapid dissemination geospatial data products. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
