With the Communications and Coverage modules, you can determine the surface area on Earth that is covered by a three (3) dB antenna contour. The intent of this blog is to walk you through how to set up the antenna, create the antenna contour, and compute the surface area.
How Do You Compute Surface Area on the Earth?
Before you begin computing the surface area of the Earth, you will need to set the stage for the scenario.

- Create a scenario with a satellite and a facility.
- Add a transmitter to the satellite and a receiver on the facility.
- Use the Area Target Wizard to create an area target of desired size and location.
- Create a Coverage Definition and Assign the satellite transmitter as the Asset.
- Select the Area Target as the Custom Region in the Grid Area of Interest.
- Enter an appropriate Point Granularity.
- Select the Grid Constraints Options to ensure each grid point takes on the properties of the facility receiver.
- Compute the Coverage by selecting Compute Accesses in the Coverage Definition.

- Add a Figure of Merit as a child of the Coverage Definition.
- Set the Figure of Merit type to Access Constraint.
- Set the Constraint to LinkEIRP.
- Determine the maximum LinkEIRP value and subtract three (3) dB. Set this result equal to the Satisfaction Threshold e.g. Satisfied if Greater than 38.0376 dBW for a transmitter.
LinkEIRP (dBW) = Power (dBW) + Maximum Gain (dB) - 3 dB = 0 dBW + 41.0376 dB - 3dB
Run the Percent Satisfied Report

- Select the Figure of Merit in the Object Browser.
- Extend the Analysis menu.
- Bring up the Report and Graph Manager.
- Generate the Percent Satisfied report.
