In May 2017, Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI) supported the Local Government of Queensland and its subsidiary, Local Government Infrastructure Services (LGIS), in the first of three trials investigating the benefits of drones as a tool for disaster relief management in Australia. This first event tested how different drone devices work with a variety of software solutions, including AGI’s UAS Traffic Management (UTM) services.
“We applaud LGIS for hosting these trials and bringing an outstanding group of industry partners together,” commended Chris Kucera, AGI Director of Air Operations. “The trials gave AGI the opportunity to work with world class UAS operators, such as Scout Aerial, and to better understand how to support their beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations. We look forward to supporting this ongoing effort.”
AGI’s UTM services address the needs of commercial and beyond line-of-sight UAS operators by providing air navigation services including airspace management, real-time flight monitoring, and deconfliction.
Utilizing Telstra’s LTE network, the operators flew drones BVLOS to test disaster scenarios including broad area surveillance, terrain surveys, asset inspections, and trial air drops. All of these real-world scenarios are crucial elements in disaster relief efforts while minimizing safety risk and better utilizing resources.
“This trial will give us a greater understanding of operations with the different software, how we can take advantage of Telstra’s LTE network and inform how we may be able to work will all parties, including regulators, to make BVLOS a safe option,” noted Clinton Parker, LGIS Director of Business Solutions. “As technology matures, we hope to not only track drones but control them using software – providing councils with the capability to deploy fleets of drones with low risk to help protect life and property.”
AGI develops commercial modeling and analysis software for land, sea, air and space systems which is used by more than 50,000 engineers, operators and analysts worldwide. AGI is leveraging almost 30 years of situational awareness software development to expand its foray into UTM services. For more information, visit www.agi.com/utm
