Keeping Kepler Covered: STK used for photometer dust cover analysis

Could there be Earths just like ours out there? That’s what NASA’s Kepler mission is trying to find out using photometric data acquired from the spacecraft. Since launching in March 2009, more than 700 exo-planet candidates have been identified by the Kepler photometer. Ball Aerospace & Technologies, the mission flight segment design and fabrication team for Kepler, was tasked with ensuring that the photometer’s dust cover did not strike the flight segment during ejection and cause severe damage to it. Engineers selected STK software as their standard trajectory modeling and analysis tool because of its ease-of-use, flexibility, 3D visualization, accuracy and familiarity.
