Keeping radar systems uninhibited by manmade obstructions is vital to homeland security efforts. The increasing use of wind farms as a source of power has necessitated analysis of their potential impact on these systems. The large, rapidly moving (tip velocity up to 170 mph) blades of wind farm turbines return Doppler shifted radar signals that mimic aircraft or even a stationary tornado. This Doppler interference results in degraded radar performance that could make aircraft or weather events nearly undetectable.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently awarded a $22 million contract to Raytheon Company to develop an "impact assessment methodology" for determining if, in fact, wind turbines might be adversely affecting critical national radar systems. Raytheon has selected AGI and its business partner Remcom, experts in electromagnetic simulation, to help develop the wind turbine/radar modeling tool. Download an overview of AGI's wind turbine/radar analysis capabilities.

The Wind/Radar plugin is a high-fidelity, radar/wind interaction analysis plugin for STK which comes in two levels: Basic and Advanced.

  • Basic Wind/Radar Plugin

  • The Basic Wind/Radar plugin performs Doppler frequency shift analysis as a result of the radar energy returning from the moving turbine blades, and compares this with moving aircraft in the same locale. This gives a qualitative indication of likely clutter caused to the radar system.

    Key Capabilities

    • 3D immersive geometry environment and output
    • Articulation of wind turbine CAD models
    • Ground and airborne radar support
    • Dynamic Doppler of clutter
    • Land areas considered

    How to Use

Open the zip file and double click on "setup.exe" to install the plugin. Launch the plugin from within the STK scenario by right-clicking on "scenario" in the Object browser, and selecting "Run Wind Farm Analysis."

  • Advanced Wind/Radar Plugin

  • The Advanced Wind/Radar plugin performs Doppler shift and energy returned from the moving turbine blades to yield a measure of Signal to Noise + Clutter. This is done for land areas and aircraft routes. The graphical representation of the results is also enhanced.

  1. Obtain temporary permission to write to AGI's ADF server by requesting a guest account.
  2. Step by Step ADF Tutorial

See the ADF Administrators Guide for specific information about configuring an ADF Server.

Follow instructions below to request a 90 day evaluation license and the ADF Server Installation download link.

AGI Data Federate requires the use of a FlexNET License Server to host your license.

Obtain the Host ID and the Hostname or IP Address:

  • Start All Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt. Right-click to 'Run as administrator'.
  • At the prompt, enter ipconfig /all
  • Under Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, note:
    • Physical Address (Host id)
    • IPv4 Address (IP Address)
  • Send this to AGI Support (moc.iga@troppus), with the subject line "Request for ADF Licenses."

You will receive an e-mail containing

  1. ADF Server Installation download link
  2. Detailed instructions for installing the License Server.
  3. Users are provided two *.lic files; a server license file installed on the FlexNET License Server and a client license, installed during the AGI Data Federate Server installation.
