Global Space & Technology Convention 2017

By: Melissa Honaker

Real talk: Space is becoming more congested and contested. This year at GSTC 2017 in Singapore a major focus of discussion has been on the increasing number of small satellites in orbit. In his welcome address at GSTC Mr. S Iswaran, Minister of Trade and Industry in Singapore brought up the fact that the number of small satellites being launched in 2017 will be an 80 percent increase over 2016. Wow. Well, when we witnessed ISRO’s successful PSLV-C37 launch and deployment of 104 satellites last week - 103 of those being nano-satellites – it might not be too hard to imagine Iswaran’s statement coming true. While the small-sat technology advances are benefitting the world, we as an industry must continue the discussion of how to be responsible satellite operators and promote innovation in the area of collision avoidance and risk mitigation. Alex Ridgeway, AGI International Systems Engineer will be talking on Friday morning at 10:10am about what AGI brings to the table as a solution to this growing problem. Alex is explaining how the Commercial Space Operations Center (ComSpOC) ensures precise intelligence to monitor threats and sustain safety in space. We hope to see you after his presentation to continue this discussion.

On a less doomsday note than thinking about crowded space and satellite crashes, we are excited to introduce our newest member of the Asia-Pacific team-Karynna Tuan, International Systems Engineer. She has been a top-notch Systems Engineer working from AGI HQ in Exton, PA and supporting our customers in their day-to-day STK analysis. Our customers rave about Karynna’s quick response rate, friendliness, positive attitude, and technical know-how. She has a M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from CU Boulder (Go Buffs!) and will now be supporting meetings, trainings and customer technical support on this side of the globe. Stop by our booth to meet her at GSTC.
